Frequently Asked Questions

  • Experiential therapy focuses on helping you access and work with emotions, body sensations, and inner experiences—not just thoughts or stories. Rather than talking about problems, experiential therapy supports you in gently experiencing what’s happening inside so deeper healing and lasting change can occur.

  • Traditional talk therapy often focuses on insight, reflection, and understanding patterns. Experiential therapy goes a step further by working directly with emotional and nervous system experiences in the present moment. Many people find this approach more effective for trauma, attachment wounds, and long-standing patterns that haven’t shifted with talk therapy alone.

  • Threshold Experiential Therapy offers a variety of experiential psychotherapy modalities, including IFS, AEDP, EMDR, Hakomi, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. All therapy is provided by licensed clinicians and tailored to each person’s needs.

  • Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) combines the use of ketamine, prescribed by medical providers, with psychotherapy to support deep emotional processing and healing. Ketamine can help reduce defenses, increase access to emotions, and open a window of neuroplasticity, making therapy more effective for some people.

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may be helpful for adults experiencing depression, trauma, anxiety, or feeling “stuck” despite previous therapy. A thorough screening process is used to determine whether this approach is appropriate and safe for each individual.

  • Threshold Experiential Therapy is based in Western Massachusetts. Our clinicians are licensed to provide therapy to clients who are residents of any part of Massachusetts.

  • All of our clinicians offer telehealth therapy for clients in Massachusetts. Experiential therapy can be very effective online, and telehealth allows greater accessibility and flexibility for many people.

Some of our clinicians also offer in-person therapy, and in the near future we aim to have a physical location for Threshold Experiential Therapy in the Northampton area.

  • Threshold Experiential Therapy is a worker-owned cooperative of licensed therapists. This means that our clinicians collectively own and govern the practice, allowing us to provide ourselves with professional community and meaningful work.

  • Finding the right therapist is an important part of the healing process, and includes both the client’s therapeutic approach and personality. You are always welcome to have a free consultation with more than one of our clinicians to see who is the right match for you.

  • Insurance acceptance varies by clinician. Some therapists may be out-of-network but able to provide documentation for reimbursement. We also use a third-party platform called Thrizer to facilitate utilizing out of network benefits. We can help you understand your options during the inquiry process.

  • Our clinicians work with a wide range of concerns, including trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, attachment wounds, life transitions, and spiritual or existential concerns. Therapy is tailored to each person rather than focused on labels.
